the story so far

In 1981 in NEW YORK Michael Diamond, John Berry and Kate Schellenbach formed a group called THE YOUNG ABORIGINALS. They had only one real fan who was Adam Yauch. After two gigs (at the same day) Adam Yauch joined the group and they were searching for a very shitty name and they decided to call themselves BEASTIE BOYS (boys entering anarchistic state towards internal excellents). With the line up beeing Kate Shellenbach - drums, Adam Yauch - bass, John Berry - guitar and Michael Diamond singing (screaming) they had their debut at Adam Yauch's 17th birthday Party. At the same time Adam Horovitz was in a band called THE YOUNG AND THE USELESS along with his best friend David Skilcen. THE YOUNG AND THE USELESS were most of the time the opener-act of the BEASTIE BOYS and also played songs of them but they also released a record called REAL MEN DON'T FLOSS EP.

1982 the Beastie Boys recorded an EP named POLLYWOG STEW at 171A. It was one of the first New York hardcore records and was also the first release on RAT CAGE RECORDS.

Later (1983) John Berry left- and Adam Horovitz joined the group the same year they released a 12" called COOKY PUSS EP.

In 1984 Kate Schellenbach broke up (later she and her band Luscious Jackson were the first band signed to Grand Royal Records). Later that year they released a single called ROCK HARD which was released on DEF JAM. For the song ROCK HARD was an illegal AC/DC sample used. 1985 they released SHE'S ON IT 12" throu DEF JAM/COLUMBIA. Around that time they were the opener act for MADONNA with DJ DOUBLE R at their side.

In 1986 they released their first full length album LICENSED TO ILL. This record has the best known BEASTIE BOYS song, Fight for your right (to party), on it. At that time LICENSED TO ILL was the fastest selling debut in the history of Columbia Records. 1987 they were touring (the famous LICENSED TO ILL tour).

Then they moved to Los Angeles and recorded a new album during that time Adam Horovitz' best friend Dave Scilken (aka Shady Rock) died on a drug overdose. In 1989 they released the next album PAUL'S BOUTIQUE. It was produced by themselves, Mario C and the Dust Brothers. PAUL'S BOUTIQUE was comercially not as succesfull as LTI was. In the songs on Paul's Boutique were much more songs sampled than on LTI and the style is much more funky.

In 1992 they founded GRAND ROYAL RECORDS and released CHECK YOUR HEAD which was produced by the Band and Mario Caldato Jr. Mark Ramos Nishita (aka Money Mark) worked as keyboarder beside ERIC BOBO for percussion, and AMERY SMITH (aka AWOL) as Hardcore drummer on CHECK YOUR HEAD.

In 1993 they released the first issue of their famous GRAND ROYAL MAGAZINE.

1994 they released an album named ILL COMMUNICATION. . On ILLCOMMUNICATION appeared Q-tip as guest-rapper on the song GET IT TOGETHER. Later that year they were the main act at the lollapalooza-festival. 1995 - Beastie Boys released a hardcore EP called ALIO E OLIO which has 8 tracks on it and runs only 11 minutes. The artwork for the CD was made by ADAM YAUCH.

In 1996 the first TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT took place. The same year THE IN SOUND FROM WAY OUT! came out - which was actually a limited edition (200 copies) FRANCE fanclub only release.

1997 the TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT 3CD-set came out which was recorded in the same year at the same titled concerts. The TIBETAN FREEDOM CONCERT -package has a live version of the Beastie Boys- song ROOT DOWN on it. In that year they gave a few concerts under the name of QUASAR. In those concerts they played only punk rock tracks.

In 1998 HELLO NASTY came out. It was produced by Mario C. and the Boys. On this album MIX MASTER MIKE from the invisible skratch piklz worked as DJ and the king of dub LEE "SCRATCH" PERRY worked with them on the song Dr. Lee PhD. Later that year they went on tour. The tour was called IN THE ROUND TOUR and they used a round stage which was positioned in the center of the halls the were playing.

1999 SOUNDS OF SCIENCE was released. SOS is a careerspanning (not a best of) 2CD-set which also features 4 brand new songs one of them is called ALIVE and was later released as single.

2000 - the Beastie Boys and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE decided to make a tour together and call this the RHYME AND REASON TOUR 2000. But Michael Diamond of the Beastie Boys had an accident with the bike in new york city and they canceld the tour.

1 year after the CD release of THE SOUNDS OF SCIENCE, the vinyl-version came out. It is a package of 4LP's packed in a nice designed package including a hardcoverbook consisting of 86 pages of pictures and comments (on almost every song on the LPs) of the band.
In the same week the DVD - VIDEO ANTHOLOGY was released. It has 18 videos on 2 discs. For some songs there are different versions of the video and the song and some remixes were only made for this release.

2001 Grand Royal had to be closed on August 31, 2001. Official statement: "This is one of the most difficult decisions we’ve ever had to make," said co-founder Mike Diamond a/k/a Mike D of Beastie Boys. "Over the years the Grand Royal family had grown to include some of the most talented musicians and staff in the business. It’s tragic that the same growth has also produced an overhead and infrastructure that can no longer viable."
